3d printing is revolutionizing the world of prototyping and manufacturing. However, as this technology continues to be developed, its counterpart is being neglected. Photogrammetry is the science of converting pictures of a physical object into a digital 3d model. While some affordable and accurate 3d scanners are on the market, I have an idea to drastically improve the process. The scanning machines that exist right now range from turntables to handheld wands, but with all these products the operator is blind to the 3d model being created. I am suggesting a device that would clip onto the back of your phone and spray a vertical green light to sense the depth of the object. Then the user would move the phone around the target as the camera simultaneously shot hundreds of photos and pieced together a 3d model. The Iphone screen would begin completely blank, but as more pictures are taken, sections of a 3d model would begin to appear. This would be extremely useful and powerful because if there is an area with intricate geometry on the object that's being scanned, the user could keep scanning that place until they saw that it had been correctly recorded. This app and attachment will create precise scans every time with the user in control, seeing every new feature that is added. I understand basic programming in Swift, but I simply don't have the knowledge to make this project come alive.
